English Springer Spaniels - Wonderful Dogs, Constant Companions

English Springer Spaniels are a good breed to consider bringing into the home if you are looking for a dog that is easy to take care of, that has a good temperament, and that has a reputation for enjoying the company of people. The Springer is the right choice for either a city or country home because they are so eager to please, loyal and like people. They are energetic and playful animals, and many owners find humor in their play. Springers are excellent all around dogs. Good training can bring excellent results in many fields, including agility, tracking, retrieving, obedience, hunting, and field trials. They are great with children and are an excellent pick for families. Adult supervision of children around any breed of dog is necessary to ensure the dog doesn’t become irritated.

Springers are quite friendly, and eager to please their owners. Their temperment has been compared to the popular Golden Retriever. They are happy to go home and lie around the house if that is what their families are doing at the time. Human contact helps them to adjust and adapt to different levels of activity. Being a long breeder of a variety of puppies, we can attest to their absolute friendliness.

As a breed, the English Springer Spaniel is a medium sized sporting dog, and can weigh anywhere from 35-55 pounds at adulthood. They are typically healthy dogs that live happy lives that average about 10-14 years on average. Field bred Spingers have short hair and are generally more active than the show bred types. Field bred Springers have docked tails, but their tails are docked longer than the show Springers so their tails are still functional as an alert signal while hunting.

A purebred English Springer Spaniel has a coat color of either liver and white or black and white. The tri-color coloration of black, liver, and white, is quite rare and will usually occur when the sire and dam are both tri-color. They are also known for having a white blaze on their faces usually down the middle.

If you need a good hunting dog, with plenty of energy, who is ready to sniff out some ‘game’, English Springer Spaniels are the breed for you. Springers have long been used as waterfowl and small game hunting dogs so they enjoy outdoor activities and being around water. Because they are an old breed, they have been a favorite canine for many years. These canines are often regarded as one of the oldest and best established gun dog and hunting breeds.

So I hope you can see why we think Springers are a wonderful fit for many different situations, lifestyles, and families. We have seen how easily these adoring animals are accepted as a part of any family.
